Can we talk about how quitting my job and moving to Denver took me 11 months instead of the 2 I planned?
I gave my notice at a warehouse gig in Amarillo thinking I would be in Colorado by spring. That was 11 months ago. The first delay was my lease, which had a clause I never read that charged me two months rent to break it early, so that was $1,900 I had to eat or wait out. Then my truck blew a head gasket in August and I dropped $2,400 on the repair because I needed it to haul my stuff. After that I had to crash at my brother's place for 4 months to rebuild my savings, and sharing a bathroom with his 3 kids almost broke me. The place I had lined up in Denver fell through because the landlord rented it to somebody else while I was still saving up. I finally signed a lease in the Capitol Hill area 3 weeks back and I move next month. My advice if you are planning a big move is to double your timeline and triple your money. Did anyone else get stuck in a holding pattern way longer than they planned when they tried to start fresh somewhere new?
Whoa, wait. You dropped $2,400 on a head gasket repair? That is brutal. My cousin had the same thing happen and he said it felt like setting money on fire just to keep his truck alive. And then you had to live with your brother's three kids for FOUR months? Sharing one bathroom with three kids would have sent me over the edge. The part that really gets me is the landlord renting your Denver place out from under you while you were still saving. That would have broken my spirit right there.
