My cross country move hit a huge snag when the moving truck broke down in Nebraska

I was driving from Portland to a new job in Nashville last month and my U-Haul blew a transmission near Lincoln at 9pm on a Sunday. The repair shop said it would be 3 days and $1,200 to fix it, so I had to rent a smaller truck and leave a bunch of my furniture behind at a storage unit. Has anyone else had a move completely fall apart like this and how did you get through it?

Oh man, "blew a transmission near Lincoln at 9pm on a Sunday" - that's basically the moving truck version of a nightmare lottery win. I had a similar thing happen when my rental's radiator gave out in the middle of Ohio, and I ended up sleeping in the cab with a half-eaten bag of beef jerky and a broken GPS. The storage unit move is rough, but honestly, you might be better off without that furniture anyway - half my stuff was just nesting dust bunnies I didn't need.

Dude, I felt that whole story in my bones. My worst move was when I drove a U-Haul from Denver to St. Louis and the alternator died just outside of Kansas City at like 2 in the morning. I had to pull off at a truck stop that had this flickering light and a guy selling bootleg DVDs out of his trunk. I ended up eating a gas station burrito and sleeping across the front seats with my feet hanging out the window because the AC was dead too. The worst part was my phone died at like 1% and I forgot my charger in the moving box that was buried under everything. Honestly, you're right about the furniture though - I finally got rid of that old couch three years later and realized I only kept it because I paid for the rental truck space.
