My dad's 'sell the car yourself' advice cost me $1,200 in Portland

Dad swore private sale would net me way more than trading in my old Civic. Spent 6 weekends on Craigslist and Facebook, got lowballed by 4 different guys who all ghosted me after test drives. Finally sold it to a guy who paid in crumpled twenties and then texted me that the clutch was slipping the next day. Dealer offered me $2,800 upfront and I ended up at $1,600 after all the hassle. Has anyone else had a family member's money advice backfire this badly, or did I just pick the worst possible market?
