My old man told me to never quit a job before I had another one lined up. I ignored him and it cost me 4 months of panic.

My dad told me the exact same thing and I thought I knew better. Quit my warehouse gig on a whim because I was bored and figured I'd find something better in a week. Joke was on me, spent 3 months burning through savings and eating ramen while sending out 100s of apps. Learned my lesson the hard way, old man was right all along. Now I tell everyone the same thing, never walk out without a safety net.

The ramen phase hits different when you're an adult and realize you could have avoided the whole thing! That safety net advice is gold because it's not just about having money in the bank, it's about keeping your mental health intact while you look. Three months of rejection emails while eating cheap noodles will mess with your head way more than sticking out a boring job for a few extra weeks. Plus having a steady paycheck while you job hunt means you can hold out for something actually decent instead of taking the first thing that comes along. Your dad knew what he was talking about for sure, sometimes the boring advice is the smartest advice.

Oh man, I gotta gently push back on one thing here. Having a job lined up before you quit isn't really about a safety net for your mental health, it's more about leverage in negotiations. When you're already employed, you can be picky about salary and start dates. Being unemployed makes you look desperate to hiring managers, even if you're trying to hide it. I've seen people take way worse offers because they felt backed into a corner after a few months of nothing.
