Rant: the advice to "just take the new job for the money" ignores that moving cities resets your whole support system
I took a job in Phoenix 5 weeks ago for $14k more and I am already looking at listings back home. Everyone kept saying the money was a no brainer, but nobody mentioned that my sister was the one watching my kid when I got stuck late. I traded a 2 minute drive to my mom's place for a 5 hour flight and a guy at the gym who told me his whole family followed him out here and it took 2 years to feel normal. The extra cash covers my rent bump and about nothing else. Did anyone else move for a raise and find out the hard way that the people you leave are the actual cost?
Man this hits home so hard. I moved 800 miles for a 12k bump two years ago and I'm still not right. My old crew used to grab beers every Thursday and now my "friends" are guys I nod at in the elevator. My kid asks when we're going back to see grandma and I gotta change the subject every time. That money gets eaten up by flights home and takeout because nobody's around to watch the kids on date night. You're not crazy for looking at listings back home, you're just doing the math nobody else did.
