That $1400 moving truck rental taught me to measure doorways first

We hired a crew in Portland to move our couch into a new apartment. They showed up, measured the hallway, and told us it wouldn't fit. We paid $1400 for the rental and the deposit before they even tried. Turns out the couch was 6 inches too wide for the turn at the top of the stairs. We ended up selling the couch for $80 on Craigslist and eating the cost. Anyone else had a moving company waste your money before they even started?

Honestly, you could sue them for that and probably win since they should have checked the dimensions before taking your deposit, that's basic due diligence for a moving crew.
