The 40-day truck lease I signed right before my crew got laid off

Last fall I locked into a 40-day rental truck for a big repaint job in Nashville, then the client pulled the contract after three days of rain. I was stuck paying $180 a day out of pocket while the truck sat in my driveway, and my crew had to scramble for side work. I finally negotiated an early return but lost the deposit, which hurt more than the idle days. Has anyone else gotten burned by committing to something big right before everything shifted? How do you decide when to walk away from a sunk cost?

Man, that timing is brutal. But calling it a sunk cost is the thing I gotta push back on. Sunk cost means you cant get it back no matter what. You could have parked that truck, eaten the $180 for a week, and then called the rental place to see if they had a shorter payout clause or a break fee. Most of those contracts have an out, you just gotta read the fine print before you sign. I always check for the early termination penalty now, cause its way cheaper than eating 40 days. Losing the deposit hurt, sure, but you might have saved more by pushing for a mid-contract return instead of waiting til you were totally stuck.

$180 a day for a truck just sitting in your driveway? That's like paying rent on a house you're not even allowed to sleep in. I would've been out there washing it every morning just to get some use out of the damn thing.
