A guy at the county fair said my hammer control looked stiff, and it made me rethink my whole swing.
I was demoing some basic scroll work at the local fair in Springfield last fall. An older smith watched for a bit, then came over and said, 'Your wrist is locked, you're all arm. Let the hammer do the work.' I went home and practiced for a week just hitting a piece of scrap steel, focusing on a loose grip and a flick from the wrist. It felt wrong at first, but my hits got way more consistent. Has anyone else had a simple piece of form advice totally change their forging?

So a guy at a fair just casually dismantled your whole technique. Classic. Bet he was eating a corn dog while he did it.

My buddy Dave had a similar thing happen when he was learning to weld. Some old-timer at a hardware store saw him struggling with a bead and just said, "You're moving too fast, kid. Slow down and watch the puddle." Dave said it sounded stupidly simple, but it completely flipped a switch for him. He spent a whole weekend just running beads on scrap, going painfully slow. His welds went from looking like bird poop to actually decent. Funny how one little tip can unlock everything, right?

Wait, he just gave that advice for free at a hardware store? Those old guys usually guard their secrets like gold.

Picked up a similar tip from an old timer at a garden supply place, of all places... he saw me trying to fix a rusty gate and just said "Use a torch, not a wrench." Spent that afternoon heating up bolts instead of fighting them, and it saved me hours of cursing. Funny how the simplest stuff is what you never think to try.
