Bought a $60 power hammer spring, ended up rebuilding the whole frame

Thought I was being smart ordering a replacement spring for my little 25lb power hammer. Got it in, went to swap it out, and found two hairline cracks in the mounting frame that the old spring was hiding. Spent the next three weekends welding up gussets and re-tapping bolt holes in my shop outside Pittsburgh. That $60 part turned into about $400 in steel and consumables, plus a lot of cussing. The hammer hits way cleaner now, but I could have bought a used press for what I sank into it. Anyone else ever start with a small fix and fall into a full rebuild? How do you decide when to cut your losses on old equipment?
