Found out my anvil was ringing way too loud after a fellow smith pointed it out

Last Tuesday at the forge meetup in Denver, a guy named Tom heard me hammering from across the yard and said 'you know that thing's ringing like a bell, right?' I strapped a heavy magnet to the side and the noise dropped by half, making it way easier to hear the metal itself. Anyone else got a quick fix for anvil ring that doesn't involve a whole new stand?

Double down on that magnet idea and try beefier magnets if you got em. I stacked two of those big ferrite ones from an old speaker on my anvil's side and it killed the ring almost completely. Also found that wrapping a thick chain around the waist of the anvil works pretty good too, just make sure it's tight enough to not rattle around. Some folks say a rubber pad under the base helps more than anything but I haven't tried that myself.

@luna_wright, that chain trick sound interesting but does it ever scratch up the anvil?

The chain wrap killed the ring on my anvil too, never scratched it once.
