Had a Saturday at the forge where every weld popped and I finally figured out why
Two Saturdays back I burned through 14 inches of good 1084 stock in one afternoon because every single forge weld came apart on me. I was working out of my garage in Akron with the door cracked, and the coal was running way hotter than my usual setup, maybe 2600 degrees at the firepot. Turns out my flux was caking up because the humidity in the shop hit 80 percent that week, so it just sat on top of the steel instead of doing its job. I switched to a dry jar I kept in the house and got three clean billets in a row that night. Anyone else had flux go bad on them from sitting out in a damp shop?
Man, I always figured flux was pretty much shelf stable and would work no matter what. Guess not, never thought about humidity messing with it but that makes total sense now. Good call keeping a dry jar inside.
