Just realized I've been using way too much flux on my forge welds
I was burning through a 1lb jar of borax every two weeks until a buddy at the shop told me to just dust it on instead of dumping it. Tried it on a billet yesterday and the weld held just as good with half the mess. Any of you guys dial back your flux and still get clean joins?

Yeah once I figured out less is more with flux everything got way easier. I went from caking it on to barely a dusting and my welds actually came out cleaner less slag to grind off.

Honestly, does anyone actually like grinding slag? I'm with you on the light dusting approach. Switch to that and suddenly your welds look way better and you're not fighting to clean everything up after. It's just less mess overall.

Oh man, you're singing my song. I learned the hard way that piling on flux just makes a nasty mess you have to fight for an extra half hour. A light dusting really does let you see exactly what the puddle is doing, and your cleanup goes way faster.
