My hammer head flew off into a customer's pickup bed

Was doing a repair on a trailer hitch outside my shop in Lubbock last Friday, swung a little too hard on a stubborn weld and the head of my cross peen launched clean off the handle. It sailed about 20 feet and landed with a loud thunk in the bed of a customer's F-150, right next to his toolbox. He just stared at me, then said 'well, at least it didn't hit the paint' and helped me fish it out. Anyone else ever had a handle give out at the worst possible moment?

Did you check the handle for dry rot before you swung it?
