Overheard a kid at the hardware store ask what a forge was for
I was picking up some 1/4 inch round stock in Bellingham and this teenager was genuinely confused. His dad just said 'for heating metal' and moved on. It hit me that the basic tools of our trade aren't common knowledge anymore. Anyone else run into this, and how do you explain what you do without sounding like a history lesson?

Yeah, I just say it's a special fire for making metal soft enough to bend. That usually clicks without getting too technical. Then I show them a picture of something simple I've made, like a leaf keychain.

Wait, you overheard a kid at a hardware store not know what a forge is? That's wild to me even though I guess it makes sense. Guess @angela_knight3's "super hot oven" explanation is the only way to go these days, I'd probably just say it's a hot box and leave it at that.

Told a kid it's like a super hot oven that lets you shape metal like clay. What do you make in your forge?

Told my nephew it's like a magic hot glue gun for steel. He got it right away. I mostly make simple hooks and bottle openers.
