PSA: My brand new 3-pound cross peen hammer flew off its handle on the first swing in my garage shop yesterday.
I was working on a simple leaf project for a garden gate, and the head shot right past my anvil, bounced off the concrete floor, and put a huge dent in my shop vac, which is just the kind of Monday I needed.

Actually, a cross peen hammer head isn't usually wedged on. They're typically just pressed onto the handle with the eye shape keeping it secure. That's why a new one flying off is such a major flaw.

Yikes, that's scary. A three pound hammer head is no joke. That's not a normal thing for a new hammer, the head should be wedged on tight. You might want to contact the company that made it, because that sounds like a real defect. Glad it missed you and just got the shop vac.

Man, that could have been so much worse. A head flying off like that is no joke, especially with that much weight behind it. I had a cheap wrench snap once and it whipped back and caught me right on the knuckle. Stuff like that really makes you check your tools twice. Definitely a good call to reach out to the company, because that's just not right for a new tool.
