Question about coal forges vs propane: a guy in Duluth sold me his old rivet forge last month and now I'm torn
Picked up a cast iron rivet forge from a retired farrier in Duluth last month for $140, and it came with about 60 pounds of old coal he had sitting in his garage since 2009. Half the folks I talk to say coal gives you better heat control and you learn to read the fire, but the other half say propane is cleaner, faster to light, and I won't stink up my garage or tick off my neighbors. I've only run propane so far and the coal route feels like learning a whole new craft, which is exciting and also a little scary. Do you all think a beginner should stick with gas and just use the coal forge for fun, or dive in headfirst with coal from the start?
