Rant: That time I tried to forge weld at sunrise and nearly lit my shop on fire

Up in Erie at 4am last Tuesday. Thought I'd hammer out some railings before the humidity hit. Got a billet too hot, sparks everywhere, and the forge threw a flame that caught my apron. Doused it with a bucket but singed my arm hair good. Anyone else have close calls with early morning shop work when you're half asleep?

Why would you blaze through a weld when you're still half asleep? Sounds like you need to either wake up properly or save that work for the afternoon when you can actually focus.

Five pounds of forge scale launched out of my firepot at 5am one time and burned a hole right through my shop stool. @vera_robinson36 you got a point about not rushing, I think the early morning light tricks you into thinking you're more awake than you really are.

Man, I feel that. I was trying to weld a gate before work one morning and my flux caught the workbench on fire, now I triple check everything before I even touch the torch.
