Shoutout to the chalk trick for forge welding temps

Ngl, I used to guess heat by color and messed up more welds than I'd like to admit. Tried marking the billet with plain sidewalk chalk, it burns off right around 1150F for me on my old coal forge. Has anyone else used this or do you have a more reliable way to judge before sticking two pieces together?

Man, my buddy tried that once and forgot to clean the chalk off before he hit it with the hammer. Projectile chalk dust everywhere, scared the crap out of him and his shop dog took off. Weld held fine though, so the trick works, just blow it off first.
