Spent 6 hours chasing a bad weld on a gate hinge before I found the real problem
Two Fridays ago I was finishing a set of driveway gates for a guy out in Mesa and one hinge weld kept cracking no matter how many times I redid it. I must have ground it out and laid it back down 5 times, and each pass looked clean. Finally my buddy Ray stopped by the shop and asked what I was welding with, and it turned out my ground clamp had a loose lug that was arcing the whole time. Swapped to a C-clamp style ground and every weld after that held fine on the first pass. Six hours gone over a $12 part. Now I check my ground before I blame my technique. Anyone else got burned by a bad ground and not realize it till way too late?
