That rust spot on my anvil face cost me 3 hours

I left my anvil uncovered overnight after an early rain last Tuesday... thought it would be fine. Woke up to a line of rust right across the face, took me forever with a wire brush and some sandpaper to get it clean again. Lost a whole afternoon of forging time, should have just thrown a tarp over it. Has anyone else dealt with rust creeping in faster than you'd expect?

Did you try just using it? A few heats and hammer strikes usually burn light rust right off the face without any scrubbing. Seems like you spent more time cleaning than you would have just working through it.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. Working rust into the surface of an anvil like that just grinds it deeper into the face and can mess with your flatness over time. A little elbow grease and some oil upfront saves you from having to deal with pitting later.

Three hours on a rust spot? That's wild, man.
