The 0.6% carbon number that changed how I quench my 1084
I was reading a heat treating chart from a shop in Pittsburgh and it said 1084 needs to be quenched at 1475F max, not the 1550F I had been using. That 75 degree gap was why about 1 in 4 of my blades was coming out with tiny cracks near the edge. I dropped my kiln temp down, held for 10 minutes, and went straight into warm canola oil at 130F. Just tested 6 knives and every single one skated a file clean with no checking. What temp are you all running for your simple carbon steels, and does it change if the bar stock is thicker than 3/16?
