The old timer who told me to quench in warm oil, not cold
My mentor, a retired farrier from upstate, always said warm your quenching oil to around 130 degrees before dipping anything thin like a chisel. I thought he was nuts for years, figured cold oil just worked faster. Last month I forgot to heat the bucket and plunged a 1/4 inch drift in, it cracked right along the shoulder. He was right, the thermal shock is way worse when the oil is cold. Anyone else been burned by skipping the preheat on their quench tank?
