Was always iffy about using a belt grinder for initial shaping until I tried it on a railroad spike knife last week

I've been using an angle grinder for roughing out basically everything for 2 years, figured the belt grinder was just for finishing work. Borrowed a friend's 2x72 and took a spike from square to profile in maybe 8 minutes without any of the kickback nonsense. Has anyone else had a tool they avoided for way too long that ended up being way better than they thought?

That bit about the kickback nonsense really hit home for me. I fought with angle grinders for years thinking I just had to deal with it. Switching over was like finding out everyone else was using a real tool while I was making things harder than they needed to be.

God yeah, "just have to deal with it" is exactly how I felt for way too long. Makes you wonder why we put up with that stuff when there's a better way sitting right there.
