Appreciation post: I looked at my credit card statement from a Denny's in Tucson and saw I tipped $0.00 on every single order
I was sitting in a Denny's in Tucson about 2 weeks ago, waiting on a patty melt, and scrolling through my banking app to find a charge I didn't remember. What I found instead was about 6 months of restaurant charges where the tip line came out to zero almost every time. I order at the counter a lot, and I guess my brain just decided that paying standing up means no tip, like the card machine is a vending machine. Then I watched the guy behind the counter remake someone's shake twice without being asked, and he was moving the whole time I sat there. I added it up and I had skipped maybe 40 or 50 tips in half a year, mostly on to go orders and coffee. It wasn't about the money either, because I tip fine when I sit down, it was just this dumb rule I never even said out loud. If you order at a counter, do you tip every time or does it depend on the spot? Genuinely want to know where people land on this because I'm clearly not consistent.
Hate to say it but I land on the other side of this one. If a place has a counter where you order and then they hand you a number and bring the food, that's a server job and I tip like one, because that person is still checking on you and refilling your drink. Where I draw the line is the true grab and go spots, like the coffee counter at the airport or a donut shop where the whole thing takes 20 seconds and there's a jar. The guy in Tucson remaking the shakes twice is exactly why I stopped treating every card machine like a vending machine.
