Five minutes at the DMV on Elm Street broke my filter
I was standing in line waiting for a new license. Guy in front of me asks the clerk a simple question about renewing. Clerk answers in this long, winding story about her cousin's dog. I zoned out for a second and then realized - I do this same thing every day at work. I answer a yes or no question with a whole novel. Anyone else catch yourself being that person?

Hear me out but I think there's a difference between being chatty and actually over-explaining what someone asked. When I worked in customer service I noticed people asking "simple" questions were actually nervous or wanted reassurance, so giving them the full picture helped. Your DMV clerk was probably just trying to be helpful in her own weird way (or maybe she really does love her cousin's dog that much). Sometimes a little extra context saves someone from coming back with another question five minutes later.

Yeah that whole thing about "giving them the full picture" really hit home for me. I was at the pharmacy last week asking where they moved the allergy meds and the guy spent five minutes explaining how the store rearranged everything because the manager "thinks people shop like they're in a maze." I got what I needed eventually but man did I learn a lesson about asking simple questions in public. I catch myself doing the same thing though, like when someone asks what time happy hour starts and I launch into this whole thing about how Wednesdays are different than Thursdays because of the trivia crowd. It's almost like we're all just trying to connect with people even over stupid stuff.
