I finally asked my mechanic why he never uses a torque wrench on lug nuts

He said 'feel is faster than numbers' and then showed me how he tightens by hand until the socket just stops moving. On a 2014 F-150 we had up on the lift, he claimed he's never had one come loose, but I still wonder how many tires he's warped over 20 years. Do you trust the feel method or stick with the spec?

Agree with the feel method for lug nuts honestly, but there's a catch. That "just stops moving" trick is great for preventing stripped threads, but it doesn't account for the fact that lug nuts need to be retorqued after driving 50-100 miles. Your mechanic probably knows this from experience, but new techs or DIY folks might skip that step and end up with loose wheels later. Also worth mentioning that some vehicles, like aluminum wheel setups or ones with hub-centric rings, are way more picky about torque specs than an old F-150 is. So yeah, feel works fine for heavy trucks like that, but I'd still use a torque wrench on a modern car with thin brake rotors.

Totally agree on the retorque thing being an easy step to miss, it's probably the biggest reason people get away with the feel method for years and then suddenly have a wheel wobble. And you're dead right about modern cars too, those thin rotors can warp if you so much as look at them wrong with an impact gun.
