Saw a 12 second clip of a welder in Gary, Indiana showing his scarred hands, and it made me sign up for a shop class
I always figured trade work was just a backup plan for people who hated school, then this guy held up hands with 14 stitches and said the burn was from teaching his daughter to weld. I start the intro class at the community college in Gary on the 8th, mostly because I want to see if I actually hate it or just told myself that.
14 stitches and a burn from teaching his kid, that's the part that gets me. We do this thing where we rank jobs by how clean they are, like a desk job is automatically better than a job where you get dirty. I noticed it at my own family reunion last summer. My cousin works at a bank and everyone asks him about his "career," then my uncle who does HVAC for 30 years gets asked if he's "still doing that" like it's a phase. It's backwards. The welder in that clip has a skill you can point at, something real that shows up in the world, and he passed it to his daughter. Signing up for that class is a good move, even if you end up hating it, because at least you'll know for yourself instead of just going off what people assume. Most of us picked our whole path based on nothing but what sounded impressive at Thanksgiving.
