The moment I stopped ignoring neighborhood watch signs
I used to breeze right past those bright yellow neighborhood watch signs without a second thought. Then last month a package thief hit three houses on my street in broad daylight, and one neighbor caught it all on her doorbell camera. She posted the footage in our local Facebook group and suddenly those signs felt less like decoration and more like a promise. Has anyone else had a petty crime change how they see something they've walked by for years?

Honestly though, the thing about neighborhood watch signs is they're not really a promise they're more of a warning. They're supposed to tell criminals that people are paying attention, not that nothing bad will ever happen. Ngl, I used to think they were just some feel good decoration too until our neighbor's car got broken into right under one of those signs. But that's exactly the point - the sign didn't stop the crime, but it did make everyone start looking out for each other more after that. Tbh, the real power of those signs is how they remind us to actually watch our neighborhoods instead of just walking past each other's houses like strangers.

Started watching my street like a hawk after somebody swiped my garden hose overnight, and now I know every dog's name on the block.

Have you ever thought about how keeping watch like that actually changes the way you see your own street, @ray356? It turns a boring road into a place with characters and habits, which might be why folks start caring more about each other after something gets stolen. That stolen hose you mentioned might have done you a favor by forcing you to pay attention.
