A local gamer told me I was shuffling my deck all wrong for years

I've been playing deck building games for about 5 years now, mostly stuff like Dominion and Star Realms at a shop in Denver. Last month, this older guy named Phil watched me pile shuffle my deck before a match and just shook his head. He said I was damaging the card edges and not actually randomizing anything. He showed me how to do a proper mash shuffle instead, where you split the deck and slide the edges together. I felt pretty silly at first, but after practicing it for a few weeks, my cards are staying in way better shape. I also notice I'm not getting those weird clumps of same cards in a row anymore. Has anyone else been shuffling wrong for a long time without realizing it?

Lol I used to riffle shuffle like i was in a poker movie, bent half my cards.

Lol "riffle shuffle" yep I totally did the same thing. Bent a whole deck of Star Wars cards back in the day, thought I looked so cool doing it too. Ever try to fix a bent card with a heavy book or is it just toast forever?
