Back in 2009 my college crew played Settlers of Catan every Sunday in the dorm lounge, and nobody brought a phone to the table
Ten of us showed up weekly at the University of Idaho and games ran 3 hours because we argued every trade out loud instead of checking a rulebook app. Now my Thursday group meets at a shop in Boise and half the table is on BGG mid game, so is that just how it goes now or does anyone still run a no screens table?
The screens creep in because games got more complicated and nobody wants to be the guy who slows down the table flipping through a rulebook. But here is the thing, that slowdown was the fun part. Arguing over whether a settlement breaks the road rule or debating a trade for ten minutes built the stories you remembered years later. When everyone stares at BGG to settle it in seconds, the game ends faster and you forget it by next week. A no screens table works if the host just says it out loud before anyone sits down, phones in a bowl by the door. Plenty of groups do it, they just have to want the argument more than they want the answer.
