I was dead wrong about cooperative board games for years

For the longest time I refused to touch any coop game, thought it was just a way to avoid real competition and strategy. Then my friend dragged me to a game night at his local shop in Austin and we played Pandemic Legacy season 1. I ate my words after we barely saved the world on the last turn, everyone was yelling and high-fiving like crazy. Now I own 5 coop games and honestly they scratch a different itch for strategy when you're puzzling together against the board. Anyone else have a genre they dismissed at first then got hooked on?

Haha for me it was deck builders. I thought they were just overcomplicated solitaire until I got obliterated by my wife three games in a row.

My buddy Jake talked all that trash about deck builders being "spreadsheet simulators." Got wrecked by his roommate in Star Realms and now he's running a local tournament.

My friend Matt used to talk all that trash about how deck builders were boring. He swore he only played racing games and shooters because everything else was a waste of time. Then his girlfriend challenged him to a game of Dominion one night and he accepted just to prove a point. She beat him so bad in the first round he didn't even get to buy a single province. The second game she wiped him out in like fifteen minutes flat. Now he texts me deck building strategies at 2 in the morning and acts like he invented the genre.
