My friend's game group in Austin has a strict 'no phones' rule that I thought was dumb until last week.
I visited them last Thursday and they make everyone put their phones in a basket. At first, I was annoyed. But after three hours of playing a heavy Euro game, I realized I hadn't checked my phone once and actually focused on the game. It made the whole night feel different, like we were all actually there. Has anyone else's group tried something like this, or is it just too strict?

My group in Denver tried the basket thing for a month and it just caused more stress. People were worried about missing calls from family or work, so they couldn't relax anyway.

Wasn't it just the worst? We tried the same thing at a friend's cabin weekend and it totally backfired. Half the group kept sneaking off to check the phone basket like it was a ticking bomb. You end up more on edge wondering what you're missing than if you just had the dumb thing in your pocket. It turns a chill hang into a whole thing where you're just managing low grade panic.

Remember my buddy's group that tried the phone lockbox? It totally killed the vibe for their D&D night. The dungeon master kept forgetting monster stats he always looked up, and two players got visibly anxious about missing their kid's bedtime call. They ditched the box after that one session.
