My friend's 'quick' game night turned into a 4 hour rule argument

We sat down for Scythe last Tuesday, and he insisted on using a fan-made expansion from BGG. By 9 PM we were still on setup because he kept changing his mind about which rules to use. He said 'just trust me, it's more balanced' but it was a mess. How do you handle it when someone brings homebrew stuff without warning?

Saw a blog post calling that "surprise homebrew." So frustrating!

Ugh, but is it really that deep? I mean, @marywilson's "surprise homebrew" thing sounds bad, but maybe your friend just got carried away. It's just one game night, so maybe let it go.

Four hours is a long time, but it's just a game night. People get excited about their projects. Maybe cut your friend some slack for being passionate, even if it was a mess. Next time just vote to play by the book rules. These things are never as big a deal a week later.
