My sister, who never plays games, asked me why I keep buying them when I haven't opened my copy of Gloomhaven from 2017 yet.

I mean, she wasn't trying to be mean, but it made me actually look at my shelf and realize I'm more into the idea of playing than the messy reality of teaching a 4-hour campaign to my regular group.

My unopened copy of Gloomhaven is basically a time capsule at this point. It's like I paid for a fantasy about being an organized person who hosts game nights.

You ever think we just like the clean promise of a new box more than the actual messy game night? My copy of Scythe is basically a very expensive decoration.

My shelf of shame has at least eight games still in shrink wrap. I bought the Wingspan nesting box organizer thinking it would finally get me to play, but now that's just a really nice box inside the original box. I feel you and corablack on buying the fantasy of being a person who has their act together. At this point I'm just collecting cardboard hopes and dreams.

Is the draw of a new game more about the hope of a perfect evening than the reality of teaching rules and cleaning up components? That sealed box holds all the potential in the world, while an opened game just reminds us of that one friend who always plays the same strategy. Maybe we're all just buying little cardboard promises to ourselves.
