Rant: Tried teaching my family Root and it was a total mess
I spent two hours last Sunday setting up the board and explaining the rules for the Marquise de Cat faction to my brother and sister. By turn three, my brother had completely forgotten how his Woodland Alliance worked and my sister just started moving pieces randomly. I learned that some games are just not for new people, no matter how much you love them. Has anyone else had a game night completely fall apart with a specific title?

Nah, jumping straight into the deep end is the best way to learn. They just need to push through the initial confusion.

Wait, you think Scythe is a good first game? That rulebook is like forty pages long, man. How is that easier than just playing cats in Root?

Root is a brutal first game for anyone not already into heavy board games. You gotta start them on something like Scythe or even Wingspan first, build up that tolerance for rules. Trying to teach three different factions at once is asking for chaos. Maybe next time just play the base game with the cats and see if they even like that style of play before adding more.
