Rule book said 2-4 players, we made it work with 7 at a potluck

Last Saturday at my buddy's place in Tacoma, we cracked open a party game I'd brought and the box clearly said 2-4 players. But there were 7 of us sitting around the table after dinner, so we just started making up house rules on the fly like passing cards around or having two teams. It got so chaotic that someone knocked over a whole bowl of chips on the board, and we had to stop to fish out the pieces. Has anyone else totally ignored player limits and just gone for it?

Did you at least get the chips out with a pair of tongs and eat them anyway? I once tried to play Catan with 8 people and we just ended up arguing about who stole whose sheep for an hour.

Grabbed the tongs right away, no way I was letting those chips go to waste. But @charlescraig, I feel you on the Catan thing. I once tried to do a 6 player game with the expansion and somehow we spent 20 minutes arguing about whether you can trade during the same turn you played a development card. Someone flipped the whole board over and chips went everywhere. Ended up just eating the chips off the floor and calling it a night.

Wait @charlescraig, isn't Catan only for 4 players max with the base game?
