That game night in Akron where a guy refused to play with the 'wrong' meeples

He spent 15 minutes sorting pieces by color before we could start. Now I always ask about house rules before joining a new group, anyone else do that?

Oh man, does this ever show up outside of games too. It's like people have these tiny secret rulebooks for how everything should work, from loading the dishwasher to merging in traffic. You never know you're breaking the code until someone gets that look on their face. Makes you wonder what invisible lines we're all crossing every day without even knowing it.

My old group never asked, but that Akron meeple guy changed my mind for good.

It's the same with how people drive. My neighbor will wait at a stop sign for a full minute if he thinks it's not "his turn," even with no other cars around. Meanwhile, someone else will roll right through. We all learned the same rules, but everyone's got their own private addendum. Makes you walk on eggshells just going to the grocery store.

We had a guy who insisted on dealing every card game hand from the bottom of the deck... said it was luckier. Took a few awkward game nights, but now I just send a quick text to the host asking if there are any weird player habits or rules I should know about. It saves everyone the headache of a surprise like that. I learned the hard way that assuming everyone plays by the book just leads to a long night.
