That guy who corrected my dice roll at a con still makes me mad

At Gen Con last year I was playing a heavy euro game and rolled a 5 for a resource. Some random guy leaned over and said actually the rulebook says it's a 4 because of a corner thing. He was right but the way he said it with this smirk just killed the whole vibe for my group. Has anyone else had a rules lawyer kill a good session for no reason?

Oh for sure, socially awkward is the nicest way to put it but I've met plenty of awkward gamers who still apologize or ask nicely. The smirk is what gets me, that's a choice, not a tic. It's like they get a little thrill from being the one who knows the rule and they have to make sure everyone else knows they know it too. The fun police really just need to learn that a quick "hey just so you know, the rulebook says 4 for that corner spot" does the job without making anyone feel like an idiot. A little humility goes a long way at a game table, nobody is playing for a scholarship.

Yeah exactly! I had almost the same thing happen at Dragonmeet a few years back. Some guy leaned over during a game of Terraforming Mars, pointed out I miscalculated my heat production by one, and then just stood there smiling while my whole table went quiet. It wasn't even a tournament, just a casual game with friends. I get that rules matter but @seth_shah you're right, it really felt less like awkwardness and more like he got a kick out of catching me. The worst part is I ended up double checking all my turns for the rest of the session which just kills the fun flow completely.

Maybe he was just socially awkward and didn't realize his smirk was coming off as condescending. Idk, sometimes people forget games are supposed to be fun over being 100% accurate.
