Tried teaching my family Catan with the normal rules versus a simpler version I made up

Honestly, we tried the full rulebook first and my sister just got lost after 10 minutes. So I cut out development cards and ports for the next game, just focusing on building roads and settlements. Ngl, they got into it way faster and we finished a full game in under an hour. Has anyone else found that stripping down a complex game works better for new players?

But you're missing half the game that way.

I played the first three hours of that game without any side quests and still loved it. Wesley_jones might have a point but sometimes the main story is enough.

Some people just want to see the story through. Not everyone has the time or wants to do every single side activity. A game can still be a full experience for them. Wesley's not wrong, but neither is Betty. Different ways to play.
