Tried teaching my mom Catan last weekend, she ended up winning with a sheep monopoly.

I remember reading somewhere that older players tend to win board games more often because they're used to negotiating and making deals in real life. Your mom probably just applied that same skill to Catan. Sheep can seem like a weak resource until someone corners the market on them, and then suddenly everyone needs what you have. It's funny how the simplest strategies can catch us off guard.

My dad pulled the same move in our first game, he hoarded all the wheat for three rounds straight. It's like they have a hidden talent for spotting the one strategy we never use.

But what if that's the whole point of the game? @hill.margaret, maybe your dad just saw a weak spot and went for it. Hoarding a key resource is a classic, solid move, not some weird trick. It forces everyone else to change their plans or trade with him, which gives him control. I'd say he just played to win, and we all ignore the simple stuff sometimes.
