Watched a guy try to trade sheep for wood in Catan and he thought he was being slick
Playing Catan at my buddy's place in Cleveland last Friday, this dude kept offering one sheep for one wood like he was doing us some big favor. He did it four times before I realized he had a sheep monopoly and was sitting on 6 of them, just slowly bleeding the table dry. How do you all deal with someone who plays the trade game like a used car salesman?
Man, come on, that guy was just playing the game better than the rest of you. Having six sheep is not cheating, it's called a strategy, and if nobody at that table was paying enough attention to notice, that's kind of on them, right? The whole point of Catan is that trading is a mind game, and if you keep handing over wood for sheep you clearly don't need, you're the one getting played, not him. You could've just stopped trading with him, or better yet, out-negotiated him and asked for two or three cards for your wood since you knew he was desperate. Instead of blaming the guy for being slick, maybe the lesson here is to watch what everyone's holding and stop being an easy mark. He didn't do anything wrong, he just read the table better than you did.
