I was wrong about using a 3/8-inch drive on boiler tube nuts
For years I stuck with a 1/2-inch drive for everything, thinking the extra torque was always better. Last month on a job at the old paper mill in Covington, my buddy saw me struggling in a tight spot and handed me his 3/8-inch set. I got the nut off in about two minutes because the smaller head fit perfectly. Now I keep both in my main kit and pick based on the clearance. Has anyone else found a tool they avoided that actually saved a job?

Because the smaller head fit perfectly" yeah, I bet it did. That's what I told myself when I finally tried a 3/8 on some old valve bolts last winter. I felt like a traitor to my 1/2 inch drive, like I was admitting defeat. But man, getting that stubborn nut off in a cramped spot without having to cuss out the pipe wrench felt like cheating. Now I just pretend the 3/8 is the backup and the 1/2 is the real hero, we both know the truth though.

So what's the biggest job you've had to give up and let the 3/8 handle?

Heard a guy at the parts counter say you should always start with the smallest tool that can do the job. Saves your knuckles and your temper. I used to grab the big gun first every time, thought it showed I was serious. Now I see the 3/8 as the smart play, not the weak one. Lets you get in clean without all the drama. The right tool isn't always the biggest one.
