Just realized I've been grinding weld caps wrong for 15 years
Ngl, I always dressed my caps with a 4-1/2 grinder and a flapper disc, but this old timer at the union hall in Cleveland showed me a burr wheel trick that leaves a smoother finish in half the time. He said it's how they did it before angle grinders got cheap, and I tried it on a pressure vessel seam yesterday, night and day difference. Anyone else pick up an older method that just works better than what you were taught?

That burr wheel trick is the real deal, I picked it up from an old pipefitter in Pittsburgh back in 08 and never looked back. The key is running it at a lower rpm than you think you need, around 6k, and let the wheel do the work instead of pushing hard. You get a finish that's almost like a brush finish, and it doesn't dig in on the root pass like a flapper can. Once you feel that smooth catch, going back to a grinder feels like you're fighting the metal the whole way.
