TIL I was grinding my weld prep wrong for 8 years
I was at a job in Pittsburgh last month working on a reactor vessel. This old hand walks by, watches me grind the bevel for maybe 20 seconds, and says 'you're burning the hell out of that, you need to move with the direction of the roll not against it.' I had no idea what he meant so he showed me. I had been grinding perpendicular to the weld joint instead of following the curve. Felt like a total idiot. Has anyone else had a simple trick like that completely flip how they work?

Man that feeling of realizing you've been doing it wrong for years just stings, doesn't it?

Man, that's a classic one. I've been there too with something that sounds basic but really changed how I work. I learned the hard way that going with the direction of the roll in grinding or sanding isn't just about speed, it's about not burning up the metal or leaving a rough finish that wastes material. It's one of those things that seems obvious once you see it, but nobody tells you until you mess up for years. Your mileage may vary, but once I stopped fighting the natural curve of things, my prep work got smoother and I stopped having to redo joints so often. Good on that old hand for speaking up, most guys just let you struggle.

Nobody tells you until you mess up for years" - wait, seriously?? That's crazy to me. I figured that kind of stuff would be like day one basics in a trade class or something. How do you even figure that out on your own without ruining a bunch of metal first?
