Had a week where every single hinge screw stripped out
Last Tuesday was the worst day I've had in my shop. Got a rush job binding a 600-page textbook for a local library. Every hinge screw I tried to set just spun in place. Stripped out 18 of them on the first book alone. Turns out the wood was some cheap particle board they used for the covers. Had to stop everything, drive across town to a different supplier for better backing boards. Cost me 4 hours and a whole afternoon of profits. Has anyone else run into mystery materials that ruin your day like that?

Feel your pain, that's a nightmare. I had a similar thing with a set of custom bifold doors last year. Thought I was buying solid pine, turned out it was that super lightweight manufactured stuff with a paper thin veneer. Every single hinge screw just giggled right out, no bite at all. Ended up having to drill out the holes and fill them with epoxy just to get the damn things to hold. Wasted a whole Saturday and a ton of swear words. It's the unexpected stuff like that which really gets under your skin, you know? Lol

Did that particle board have that fake wood grain finish on it too? Buddy of mine had the same problem with some "mystery boards" he bought at a garage sale, ended up using wood glue and toothpicks to get the screws to bite.
