I used to laugh at people who swore by bone folders until I tried a $12 one from Talas and my headcaps got 50% cleaner.
Has anyone else had a tool they thought was a gimmick completely change their work?

Honestly, my big one was a basic awl for bookbinding. Thought it was just a pointy stick until I started using it to pre-poke sewing holes. Total game changer for keeping signatures lined up, right?

Oh man, I totally get that! I was the same with a good paper knife. Always just used a cheap box cutter until I got a proper one. It sounds a lot like what beth_singh said about the awl, where the right tool just makes everything so much smoother and cleaner.

Right tool, right job. I had the same thing with a good bone folder, and linda114 is spot on about circle cutters, those things can be brutal when they're cheap.
