Pre-cut covers are everywhere in my local shops now. Half the binders call it a smart move, the other half say it ruins the craft. Where do you stand?

The "ruins the craft" bit is EXACTLY what I worry about. Pre-cut covers just hand you the easy way out without building real skill. If you never learn the proper cutting and fitting, you miss the whole point of doing it yourself. That shortcut mentality can make everything feel cheap and mass-produced. So I gotta ask, what's the actual argument FOR them besides saving time? Is time really more important than doing something right?

Actually, pre-cut covers can teach the basics before diving into complex cuts. They're a starting point, not the whole journey.

Lowering the barrier to entry isn't selling out.

My friend tried to reupholster her first chair last year and got so scared of cutting the fabric wrong she almost quit. A pre-cut kit gave her the confidence to actually start, and now she's taking a class to learn proper cutting. Sometimes the "shortcut" @wren638 is just the on-ramp that gets people onto the road. If the goal is more people doing the craft, a simple start can lead to deeper skills later. Not everyone has the time or nerve to jump straight into the deep end.
