The $40 bone folder that beat my $120 one, can cheap gear actually win?

I spent 3 months ignoring the cheap bone folder my mentor pushed on me, swore by my expensive branded one instead. Then I used hers on a 200-page text block in Portland and the creases were cleaner with zero fraying on the linen. Is it the shape, the plastic blend, or am I just fooling myself? Who else has had a budget tool outwork the big-name version?
