Warning: my shop flooded last Tuesday and I learned what 300 pounds of wet book board actually feels like
A pipe burst above my bench at 6am and by noon I had 40 signatures of a half finished rebind sitting in an inch of water. Lost the lot but my neighbor Dana showed up with a fan and a stack of blotting paper, and we saved 12 of them. Has anyone here dealt with a soaked text block that wasn't totally ruined? I'm still figuring out what to toss.
Everyone says to freeze wet text blocks but that can mess up the glue and warp the spine worse than air drying. In my experience you want to interleave every few pages with blotting paper and change it out twice a day, which is slow and annoying but saves more of the block. The 12 you saved with Dana are probably the ones worth fighting for, the rest may not be worth the weeks of work. Paper does weird things when it dries uneven and you'll end up with waves you can't press out.
