A cheap soil moisture meter taught me I've been underwatering for years
I always thought I was overwatering my pothos because the top soil looked damp. Bought a $7 moisture meter at Lowe's last month. Stuck it in deep and the needle barely moved. Turns out dry soil below the surface was choking the roots. Now I water based on the bottom third reading, not the top. Anyone else have a simple tool that showed them they had it backward?

My buddy John left his fern on a strict schedule for a year and wondered why it looked sad all the time. Then he stuck a cheap moisture meter in there and found out the bottom was basically a swamp, he'd been watering it like crazy while the surface felt dry.

I always thought I was overwatering" - man, same here. I killed a succulent once by lovingly drowning it every week because the top looked dry, turns out the bottom was swimming. My moisture meter basically told me I've been a plant helicopter parent for years, just doing the opposite of what they actually needed.
